The Gandhi Seva Sangh of T&T Inc is a non-profit organization responsible for the Mahatma Gandhi Statue located on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, Trinidad.
Shortly after the assassination of Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, the San Fernando business community took the initiative to honour his memory with a life-size bronze statue. Designed and crafted by renowned Indian sculptor Yawalkar in Bombay, India, the statue was officially installed in May 1952 on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, by then Governor of Trinidad and Tobago, Sir Herbert Rance.
This statue holds the distinction of being the first statue of Mahatma Gandhi to be installed in the Western Hemisphere following his assassination. It is a powerful, lifelike representation of the Mahatma, capturing his serene presence and iconic imagery. In his hands, he holds the Bhagavad Gita, and at his waist is a timepiece—symbolic elements that reflect some of the few possessions he left behind.
Over the decades, the pedestal on which the statue stands has evolved to reflect more contemporary aesthetics, while still preserving its historical significance. The statue faces North and is prominently located opposite the Roman Catholic Church on Harris Promenade, where it continues to inspire all who pass by.
Surrounding the statue are benches, thoughtfully placed to create a space of peace and contemplation—echoing the very principles of truth and nonviolence that Gandhi lived and died for..
